Overview

Salicylic sugar powder is a topical pharmaceutical formulation used for umbilical cord care in preterm infants. It is a combination of salicylic acid and sugar. Clinical trials have shown it to be effective in reducing cord separation time and decreasing bacterial colonization of the umbilical cord compared to chlorhexidine. While generally well-tolerated, it has been associated with a slightly higher incidence of minor cord scar bleeding. The salicylic acid component provides keratolytic and antiseptic properties, aiding in the natural separation of the umbilical cord.
