Topical saline is a sterile solution of sodium chloride in water, most commonly prepared at an isotonic concentration of 0.9% (normal saline). It is a fundamental clinical tool used for wound irrigation, mechanical cleansing of the skin and mucous membranes, and as a vehicle for other medications. In otorhinolaryngology, topical saline is frequently employed as a nasal spray or irrigation to improve mucociliary clearance and reduce inflammation in conditions like chronic rhinosinusitis and allergic rhinitis. In ophthalmology, it serves as a lubricant for the ocular surface and a diagnostic aid in imaging procedures such as magnetic resonance dacryocystography. Due to its physiological compatibility, it is also the standard control or placebo in a wide range of clinical trials evaluating topical dermatological, ophthalmic, and intranasal therapies.
