Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Saline solution isotonic 0.9% NaCl (commonly referred to as normal saline or physiological saline) is a sterile, isotonic solution of sodium chloride in water. In the context of the VENLID clinical trial (NCT06354816), it is utilized as a pharmacologically inert placebo comparator to evaluate the efficacy of a 10% lidocaine spray (Xylocaine) in reducing pain associated with the insertion of a peripheral intravenous catheter (PIVC) in female adults. The solution is administered topically via a spray dispenser (0.5 ml or 5 pulses) to the planned insertion site with a 2-minute exposure time. Because it is isotonic with human blood, it has no active pharmacological properties or specific biological targets in this context, serving purely as an inactive control.
