Salipro Biotech-MCT1-Oncology is a preclinical-stage therapeutic program developed by Salipro Biotech targeting Monocarboxylate transporter 1 (MCT1), also known as SLC16A1. MCT1 is a transmembrane protein that plays a critical role in the transport of monocarboxylates, particularly lactate, across cell membranes. In the context of the Warburg effect, many cancer cells rely on MCT1 to export lactate produced during glycolysis to maintain intracellular pH, or to import lactate as an alternative energy source in oxidative tumor regions. By inhibiting MCT1, this program aims to disrupt the metabolic symbiosis within the tumor microenvironment, leading to metabolic stress and tumor growth inhibition. The program utilizes the proprietary Salipro® technology, which employs saposin-based lipid nanoparticles to stabilize the MCT1 protein in its native, functional state, thereby facilitating the discovery of potent and selective inhibitors.
