Overview

Salix nigra, commonly known as western black willow or black willow, is a species native to North America traditionally used in herbal medicine. The bark is primarily valued for its content of **salicin**, a natural compound metabolized to salicylic acid—chemically related to aspirin. It acts as an analgesic and anti-inflammatory, targeting enzymes such as cyclooxygenases that mediate pain and inflammation. Historically, black willow has been employed for relief of headaches, musculoskeletal pain, joint discomfort, fever, and various inflammatory conditions. Modern studies confirm anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, and further research shows that extracts can also inhibit hepatitis C virus replication in vitro. Traditional uses extend to conditions such as arthritis, dysentery, sexual dysfunctions, fever, wound healing, and various other inflammatory ailments. The bark and root are typically prepared as teas, decoctions, or topical applications. Black willow is generally considered gentle in its effects and is used in both single-herb and combination formulas for joint and musculoskeletal support[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9].
