Salmonella Paratyphi A (NVGH 308) is a live bacterial challenge agent consisting of a virulent strain of *Salmonella enterica* serovar Paratyphi A. Originally isolated in 2006 from a patient in Kathmandu, Nepal, this strain is utilized in Controlled Human Infection Models (CHIM) to induce paratyphoid fever in healthy adult volunteers under strictly monitored clinical settings. The primary purpose of this agent is to facilitate the evaluation of paratyphoid vaccine candidates by establishing a predictable infection 'attack rate' (typically targeted at 60–75%). It is administered orally with a sodium bicarbonate buffer solution to neutralize gastric acid. The NVGH308 strain is susceptible to standard antibiotics, including ciprofloxacin, which ensures participant safety by allowing for effective treatment of the induced infection. Research involving this strain is being conducted by institutions such as the Aga Khan University in Pakistan and the University of Oxford to refine infection models for use in endemic regions.
