Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Salmonella phage cocktail (also known as ESPCAL) is a liposome-encapsulated bacteriophage cocktail being developed for the treatment and prevention of Salmonella infections. Developed by the Tbilisi Medical Academy in collaboration with the George Eliava Institute of Bacteriophage, Microbiology and Virology, the therapy utilizes cationic liposomes to encapsulate lytic bacteriophages specific to Salmonella species. This encapsulation approach is designed to extend the in vivo lifespan of the phages, shield them from host immune defenses, improve stability against gastric acid, and enhance their ability to target intracellular pathogens. The project is currently in preclinical research.
