Overview

Salmonella phage P22 is a temperate bacteriophage that infects *Salmonella typhimurium*. In the biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors, it is primarily utilized as a **virus-like particle (VLP)** platform for the modular delivery of vaccines and therapeutic cargos. The P22 capsid is highly stable and can be recombinantly produced in *Escherichia coli*, allowing for the encapsulation of various proteins, peptides, or small molecules through a directed assembly process. Beyond its role as a delivery vehicle, P22 has been extensively studied for **phage therapy** applications to combat antibiotic-resistant *Salmonella* infections. Its mechanism of action involves binding to the O-antigen of the *Salmonella* lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and subsequent injection of its genetic material, leading to the lysis of the bacterial cell.
