Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Salmonella polysaccharide-Pfs230 conjugate vaccine is a dual-target glycoconjugate vaccine candidate in preclinical development by the International Vaccine Institute (IVI) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). It is designed to protect against both malaria transmission and invasive non-typhoidal Salmonella (iNTS) infections, which are co-endemic in regions like sub-Saharan Africa. The vaccine consists of Salmonella O-specific polysaccharides (OSP) from Salmonella Typhimurium and Salmonella Enteritidis chemically conjugated to the Plasmodium falciparum transmission-blocking antigen Pfs230 (specifically the Pfs230D1 domain). In this conjugate, Pfs230 acts as both a carrier protein to enhance the immunogenicity of the T-cell-independent Salmonella polysaccharides and as an antigen to elicit transmission-blocking antibodies against malaria.
