Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge crude extract (DCE), also known as Danshen extract, is an herbal preparation derived from the roots of the Salvia miltiorrhiza plant. It is being investigated for its potential therapeutic application in glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). DCE exhibits anticancer activity by inducing G0/G1 cell cycle arrest and promoting apoptosis in GBM cell lines. Its mechanism of action involves the modulation of the tumor microenvironment through the downregulation of pro-inflammatory signaling pathways, specifically the IL-17, NF-κB, and TNF pathways. This results in the decreased expression of key genes such as CXCL2, CXCL3, CXCL8 (IL-8), and PTGS2 (COX-2). Preclinical studies in U87-MG xenograft models have demonstrated that DCE significantly suppresses tumor growth.
