Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Salvia miltiorrhiza extract is a botanical preparation derived from the root of the plant *Salvia miltiorrhiza* Bunge (commonly known as Danshen). It has been used extensively in traditional Chinese medicine for cardiovascular and other health conditions. The extract contains multiple bioactive compounds including water-soluble phenolics (such as salvianolic acids), liposoluble tanshinones (notably tanshinone IIA), and polysaccharides. Its mechanisms of action are diverse and include antioxidant effects; anti-inflammatory activity; vasodilation; antiplatelet aggregation; improvement of microcirculation; immunomodulation; hepatoprotection; nephroprotection; and possible calcium channel antagonism. Clinical studies have shown potential benefits in coronary artery disease (including angina pectoris), acute ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction recovery by reducing reperfusion injury and improving endothelial function[2][5]. Recent trials also suggest efficacy for lower urinary tract symptoms in men[6] and inflammatory bowel disease[7]. The quality of clinical evidence varies due to heterogeneity in preparations and study design.
