Overview

Salvia officinalis (commonly known as Sage) is a perennial plant in the Lamiaceae family native to the Mediterranean and Middle East but now cultivated worldwide. Traditionally used in folk medicine for a wide range of conditions including seizures, ulcers, gout, rheumatism, inflammation, dizziness, tremor, paralysis, diarrhea and hyperglycemia. Modern research has identified pharmacological activities such as anticancer (antitumor), anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive (pain-relieving), antioxidant (free radical scavenging), antimicrobial/antibacterial/antifungal effects; antimutagenic; antidementia; hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic properties. It has been investigated for potential benefits in cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease due to its cholinesterase inhibitory activity and possible ability to increase acetylcholine levels. Other reported actions include CNS depressant effects and estrogenic activity. The main active constituents are found in the leaf and volatile oil fractions—including camphor—which can be neurotoxic or hepatotoxic at high doses[1][3][4][5].
