Overview

Salvianolate is a water-soluble compound primarily composed of salvia magnesium acetate and related homologues, extracted from the Chinese herb Salvia miltiorrhiza. It is used as an injectable traditional Chinese medicine. Salvianolate exhibits multiple pharmacological activities including antioxidative effects, anti-inflammatory actions, improvement of microcirculation, and protection of vascular endothelium. Its mechanisms involve inhibition of oxidative stress and inflammation (including downregulation of Smad2/3 and TGF-β1 expression), promotion of angiogenesis via stimulation of the VEGF/VEGFR-2 signaling pathway by macrophages, inhibition of platelet aggregation and activation, as well as protection against renal injury. Clinically it is mainly indicated for ischemic cardiocerebral vascular diseases such as coronary heart disease (CHD), unstable angina pectoris, diabetic nephropathy (DN), hypertensive nephropathy (HN), acute cerebral ischemia/stroke, liver damage, diabetes complications, and in-stent restenosis[1][3][4][5][6].
