Overview

SAM0021 is a small molecule drug developed by Samsara Therapeutics that acts as an autophagy-inducing agent. It modulates beclin-1 and inhibits alpha-synuclein, a protein whose accumulation is implicated in Parkinson's disease pathology. By boosting autophagy, the natural cellular process for clearing waste and toxic proteins, SAM0021 aims to remove alpha-synuclein build-up in neuronal cells, potentially restoring motor function impaired by Parkinson’s disease. The drug targets the underlying cause of Parkinson’s by enhancing cellular self-cleaning mechanisms rather than only treating symptoms. Samsara Therapeutics is advancing SAM0021 toward clinical trials with support from The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
