Samarin

Samarin is an over-the-counter antacid and fruit salt product primarily used to treat heartburn and acid indigestion. It is a combination product typically containing sodium bicarbonate, citric acid, tartaric acid, and sodium carbonate. When dissolved in water, these ingredients react to form a buffering solution. In recent clinical research, Samarin has been investigated for a novel indication in obstetrics: the treatment of labor dystocia. The rationale is that bicarbonate acts as a lactic acid buffer; by reducing the accumulation of lactate in the myometrium (reflected by amniotic fluid lactate levels), it may enhance uterine contractile performance and reduce the necessity for emergency caesarean sections.
