Samarium-153 is a radioactive isotope utilized in radiopharmaceuticals for targeted radionuclide therapy. It functions as a beta emitter with some gamma emissions, delivering localized radiation to target cells. It is commonly complexed with chelating agents such as ethylenediaminetetramethylene phosphonate (EDTMP) or 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecanetetramethylenephosphonic acid (DOTMP) to specifically target bone metastases, particularly in prostate cancer. Beyond bone-targeted applications, Samarium-153 has also been explored in preclinical and early-stage development for liver malignancies and neuroendocrine tumors, sometimes incorporated into microspheres or conjugated to specific targeting molecules like DOTA-TATE. It can also exhibit radiosensitizing properties, enhancing the effect of other therapies.
