Samarium-153-dotmp is a radiopharmaceutical composed of the beta and gamma-emitting radioisotope samarium Sm 153 chelated to DOTMP (1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-tetramethylenephosphonic acid). The DOTMP moiety targets and binds to areas of active bone growth or turnover, such as those found in bone tumors or metastases. This enables selective delivery of cytotoxic radiation from the radioactive samarium directly to bone lesions. The drug is being developed primarily for the treatment of primary and metastatic bone cancers, with potential benefits including destruction of tumor cells in bone and mitigation of pain associated with bone metastases[1][2][6]. It is administered intravenously.
