Samarium-153 lexidronam is a radiopharmaceutical used to relieve bone pain associated with certain cancers, particularly those that have metastasized to the bone. It consists of the radioactive isotope samarium-153 chelated with ethylenediaminetetramethylene phosphonate (EDTMP), which has a high affinity for areas of increased bone turnover such as osteoblastic lesions. After intravenous administration, it localizes in these regions and emits beta radiation, delivering targeted cytotoxic effects to tumor-invaded bone tissue and providing pain relief. The onset of pain relief typically occurs within one week, with maximum effect at three to four weeks. The drug was originally developed by Dow Chemical Company and is marketed under the brand name Quadramet[1][2][4][5][6][8].
