Samarium-153 oxide-loaded polystyrene microspheres ([153Sm]Sm2O3-PS) is a novel theranostic radiopharmaceutical being developed for the treatment of liver cancer through hepatic radioembolization. Developed collaboratively by Taylor's University, the Malaysian Nuclear Agency, University of Malaya Medical Centre, and the University of Nottingham, the formulation consists of polystyrene microspheres containing samarium-153 oxide. Samarium-153 is a theranostic radionuclide that emits therapeutic beta particles to induce cancer cell death and diagnostic gamma rays for post-procedure SPECT/CT imaging. Administered via intra-arterial or intra-tumoral injection, the microspheres lodge in the tumor's microvasculature, delivering targeted radiation directly to the tumor microenvironment. It is currently in preclinical development as a potential alternative to Yttrium-90 microspheres.
