Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sambucol Black Elderberry is a natural herbal supplement developed by Pharmacare, primarily used for the relief and reduction of symptoms associated with the common cold, influenza-like illness, and upper respiratory tract infections. The active ingredient is a standardized extract of black elderberry (*Sambucus nigra*) fruit juice, which contains high concentrations of bioactive anthocyanins, including cyanidin-sambubiosides and cyanidin-glucosides. These compounds are thought to exert antiviral effects by binding to viral hemagglutinin spikes, thereby preventing viral entry into host cells and inhibiting replication. Additionally, the extract provides antioxidant support and may modulate the immune response by influencing cytokine production. It is widely available as an over-the-counter liquid formulation and has been evaluated in clinical studies for its efficacy in pediatric and adult populations.
