Overview
Sambucus nigra flower (elderflower) is the blossom of the European or black elder tree. It has a long history of use in traditional medicine for treating colds, influenza-like illnesses, and other respiratory conditions. The flowers contain antioxidant compounds and may have antidiabetic effects[1][5]. Elderflowers are approved by the German Commission E for use in colds; however, robust clinical evidence supporting their efficacy is limited compared to that for elderberries[5]. The mechanism of action is thought to involve antioxidant activity and possible modulation of inflammatory pathways. Elderflowers are used as dried extracts or infusions in various over-the-counter herbal products.
