Overview

Sampeginterferon beta-1a (BCD-054, brand name Tenexia) is a pegylated recombinant human interferon beta-1a developed by the Russian biotechnology company BIOCAD for the treatment of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). The drug acts as an agonist of the interferon alpha/beta receptor (IFNAR), exerting immunomodulatory effects that reduce neuroinflammation and the frequency of clinical relapses. The pegylation of the interferon beta-1a molecule extends its half-life, allowing for a reduced dosing frequency of once every two weeks compared to the weekly or more frequent dosing required for non-pegylated interferon formulations. BCD-054 has been evaluated in Phase II/III clinical trials comparing its efficacy, safety, and tolerability against placebo and standard interferon beta-1a (Avonex).
