Drug intelligence / Profile preview
SAMSP1 (sporozoite-associated mosquito saliva protein 1) is a recombinant protein vaccine candidate and biomarker being developed by Johns Hopkins University and Yale University for the prevention of malaria (Plasmodium infection). SAMSP1 is a salivary gland protein from the Anopheles gambiae mosquito that is associated with sporozoites during transmission. It facilitates sporozoite movement, enhances cell traversal, and acts as an immune antagonist by inhibiting neutrophil chemotaxis, thereby promoting parasite infectivity in the host. Active immunization with recombinant SAMSP1 or passive immunization with SAMSP1 antibodies has been shown to reduce the Plasmodium parasite burden in preclinical models, demonstrating its potential as a transmission-blocking vaccine.
