Drug intelligence / Profile preview
San'ao Tang + Qingjin Huatan Tang is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) combination therapy consisting of two classic formulas: San'ao Tang and Qingjin Huatan Tang. San'ao Tang is a simplified version of Ma Huang Tang, typically containing *Ephedra sinica* (Ma Huang), *Prunus armeniaca* (Xing Ren/Bitter Almond), and *Glycyrrhiza uralensis* (Gan Cao/Licorice), aimed at relieving exterior wind-cold and ventilating the lungs. Qingjin Huatan Tang is a complex formula composed of herbs such as *Scutellaria baicalensis* (Huangqin), *Gardenia jasminoides* (Zhizi), *Platycodon grandiflorum* (Jiegeng), and *Fritillaria thunbergii* (Zhebeimu), designed to clear lung heat and resolve phlegm. This specific combination is utilized to treat the "external cold and internal heat" (外寒内热) syndrome in patients with refractory chronic cough, where symptoms of an exterior chill coexist with internal inflammatory heat and mucus production. It is currently being evaluated in clinical trials in China, specifically by the Shanghai Songjiang District Sijing Hospital, to assess its efficacy in reducing cough frequency and improving quality of life.
