Overview

San-Huang-Xie-Xin-Tang is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula used for centuries for gastrointestinal and inflammatory disorders, including gastritis, gastric bleeding, peptic ulcers, atherosclerosis, upper respiratory tract infection, diabetic nephropathy, and more[1][2][7]. The formula comprises three herbs: Coptidis rhizoma (Coptis chinensis), Rhei rhizoma (Rheum palmatum or Rheum officinale), and Scutellariae radix (Scutellaria baicalensis)[1][2][3][4][5]. Its mechanism is largely anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory, related to suppression of cytokine/chemokine production, inhibition of the NF-κB pathway, and reduction of MAPK signaling. It also possesses anti-oxidant, anti-hypertensive, neuroprotective, and anti-apoptotic effects[1][2][7]. Active constituents include berberine, baicalin, emodin, rhein, aloe-emodin, and baicalein[2].
