Drug intelligence / Profile preview
San-Ren Run-Chang prescription is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal formula developed by researchers at the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C). The formula is characterized by its use of three specific kernels or seeds (San-Ren)—typically Semen Persicae (peach kernel), Semen Armeniacae Amarum (bitter apricot seed), and Semen Pruni (bush cherry seed)—which are traditionally used to moisten the intestines and facilitate stool passage. Pharmacologically, the prescription works by modulating the gut-brain axis, specifically by regulating serotonin (5-HT) levels and the expression of water channel proteins such as Aquaporin-3 (AQP3) and Aquaporin-4 (AQP4) in the colonic mucosa. These actions enhance intestinal secretion and motility, providing relief from symptoms like abdominal pain and infrequent bowel movements. It is often studied as a safer alternative to conventional stimulant laxatives for chronic constipation management.
