Sanazole is a synthetic **3-nitrotriazole compound** that was developed as a **hypoxic radiosensitizer** and as a potential **cytotoxic agent** for the treatment of solid tumors. It enhances the killing effect of radiation therapy and has also shown **cytotoxic activity independently in solid tumor cells**. Mechanistically, sanazole acts as a radiosensitizer by increasing **intracellular oxidative stress** and promoting apoptosis in hypoxic tumor cells. Notably, it has also been studied as a **sonosensitizer**, enhancing ultrasound-induced cell death. Sanazole was initially developed by Kyoto University and was under investigation mainly for oncology indications, particularly neoplasms. Its global R&D status is discontinued.
