Overview

Sandalwood refers to the fragrant wood and essential oil derived primarily from the tree Santalum album. In traditional medicine systems such as Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine, sandalwood has been used for centuries for its purported therapeutic properties. The main active compounds in sandalwood oil are α-santalol and β-santalol. Sandalwood is believed to have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial (antibacterial, antifungal), antiviral (notably against herpes simplex viruses), antioxidant, astringent, diuretic, expectorant, and wound-healing effects[1][4][5][6][7][8]. It is also widely used in aromatherapy for its calming effects on anxiety and stress[1][6][10]. Some studies suggest potential anticancer activity due to α-santalol’s ability to induce cell death in cancer models[5]. Traditional uses include treatment of skin conditions (psoriasis, eczema), urinary tract infections (UTIs), digestive issues (stomach ache), respiratory ailments (coughs/colds/bronchitis), mood disorders/anxiety relief[1][3][4]. However, robust clinical evidence supporting these uses is limited.
