Sangbaipi decoction is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herbal formula historically used to treat lung diseases characterized by phlegm-heat obstruction and respiratory symptoms such as cough, wheezing, and asthma. The formula is referenced in classical TCM texts like Jingyue Quanshu and is composed of multiple herbs with anti-pyretic (fever-reducing), antitussive (cough-suppressing), anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and diuretic properties. Key ingredients include Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi (Huang Qin), Coptis chinensis Franch. (Huang Lian), Cortex Mori (Sang Bai Pi/White Mulberry Root Bark), and Armeniacae Semen Amarum. Modern pharmacological studies have demonstrated that Sangbaipi decoction exhibits both in vitro and in vivo anti-influenza activity by inhibiting viral replication—potentially through effects on hemagglutinin and neuraminidase—and exerts significant anti-inflammatory effects[1][10]. It has also been widely applied for acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) in China[2][4]. The mechanism of action involves multi-target modulation including antiviral activity against influenza virus proteins as well as immunomodulatory actions.
