Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sanggua is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula developed as a tablet for the treatment of impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and mild type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The formula is composed of five primary botanical ingredients: mulberry leaf (Morus alba), bitter melon (Momordica charantia), kudzu root (Pueraria lobata), Chinese yam (Dioscorea opposita), and cassia seed (Senna tora). Mechanistically, it is believed to lower blood glucose and improve lipid profiles through the action of mulberry polysaccharides and bitter melon saponins. In TCM theory, it functions by clearing heat, generating body fluids, and tonifying the spleen, stomach, lungs, and kidneys. It is currently being evaluated in clinical trials led by Tongji Hospital to assess its efficacy on HbA1c, fasting blood glucose, and gut microbiota modulation.
