Overview

Sanguisorba officinalis, commonly known as greater burnet or great burnet, is a perennial herb in the Rosaceae family traditionally used in Chinese medicine primarily as a hemostatic agent to stop bleeding and treat burns and scalds. The root (Sanguisorbae radix) is the main medicinal part. Extracts from Sanguisorba officinalis have demonstrated multiple pharmacological effects including anti-cancer, antiviral (notably against hepatitis B virus), anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, neuroprotective (including potential benefits for Alzheimer’s disease and stroke), hepatoprotective, antioxidant, and antidiabetic activities. It has also been used for conditions such as ulcerative colitis, diarrhea, dysentery, bladder problems, hemorrhoids and to promote wound healing. Its mechanism of action is attributed mainly to its astringent properties—helping slow or arrest blood flow—and its rich content of bioactive compounds such as triterpenoids and polyphenols that contribute to its diverse biological effects[1][3][4][5][7].
