Overview

Sanhuang Yishen Capsule (SHYS) is a traditional Chinese patent medicine formulated as an herbal combination therapy for chronic kidney diseases, particularly diabetic nephropathy (DN), diabetic kidney disease (DKD), IgA nephropathy, and chronic renal failure. The capsule contains a blend of 15 herbal ingredients including Astragalus mongholicus, Panax quinquefolius, Dioscorea oppositifolia, Cornus officinalis, Cuscuta chinensis, Polygonatum sibiricum, Rehmannia glutinosa, Euryale ferox, Rosa laevigata, Leonurus japonicus, Salvia miltiorrhiza, Conioselinum anthriscoides (‘Chuanxiong’), Atractylodes lancea, Paeonia lactiflora and Gypsophila vaccaria[1][4]. Clinical and preclinical studies indicate that SHYS can alleviate proteinuria in DN patients and improve renal function by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress. Mechanistically it appears to act by promoting PINK1/Parkin-mediated mitophagy in the kidney while inhibiting NLRP3 inflammasome activation—thereby improving mitochondrial injury and inflammatory responses[6]. Additional research suggests modulation of gut microbiota may contribute to its renoprotective effects[4].
