Sanjiu Herbal Patch

Sanjiu Herbal Patch is a traditional Chinese medicinal (TCM) formulation applied topically to specific acupoints during the "Sanjiu" period—the three coldest nine-day periods of the winter. Developed and studied by researchers at The Second Affiliated Hospital & Yuying Children’s Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University, this therapy is primarily indicated for the treatment of persistent allergic rhinitis. The patch typically consists of a paste made from herbs such as *Sinapis alba* (white mustard seed), *Corydalis yanhusuo*, *Asarum sieboldii*, and *Euphorbia kansui*, often mixed with fresh ginger juice. Its mechanism of action involves the transdermal absorption of active herbal compounds and the stimulation of acupoints like Feishu (BL13), Dazhui (GV14), and Shenshu (BL23). This dual action is thought to modulate the immune system by balancing Th1 and Th2 cytokine production—specifically by increasing Interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) and decreasing Interleukin-4 (IL-4) levels—and reducing serum Immunoglobulin E (IgE), thereby alleviating the inflammatory response associated with allergic rhinitis.
