Overview
Sanwu Huangqin Tang (三物黄芩汤), also known as San Wu Huangqin Decoction or SWHD/SHD, is a classical traditional Chinese medicine formula first recorded in the ancient text "Jin Gui Yao Lue." It consists of three main herbal ingredients: Scutellaria baicalensis (Huang Qin), Sophora flavescens (Ku Shen), and Rehmannia glutinosa (Di Huang). The formula is traditionally used for clearing heat and nourishing yin. Its primary indications include treatment of colds caused by wind-pathogen, hyperpyrexia (high fever), infectious diseases, cancer support therapy, and detoxification. Modern research has demonstrated that Sanwu Huangqin Tang exhibits antiviral activity against influenza A virus by inhibiting viral replication at multiple stages and downregulating key viral proteins such as haemagglutinin (HA), neuraminidase (NA), nucleoprotein (NP), and matrix-2 protein (M2). It also shows anti-inflammatory effects in animal models of Behcet's disease. The mechanism appears to involve both direct antiviral action and modulation of immune responses[1][2][8].
