Overview

Sanzi Huangshi Pill is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) hospital preparation developed by the Shanghai Municipal Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine for the treatment of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). The formula is composed of three 'seed' herbs—*Psoralea corylifolia* (Buguzhi), *Cuscuta chinensis* (Tusizi), and *Lycium barbarum* (Gouqizi)—along with *Realgar* (Xionghuang), a mineral containing arsenic sulfide. The mechanism of action involves the induction of apoptosis and cell differentiation in dysplastic myeloid cells, primarily driven by the arsenic components, while the herbal constituents are intended to tonify the kidney and support bone marrow hematopoiesis. It is specifically studied in patients with low-risk MDS to improve anemia and other cytopenias.
