Sapindus mukorossi extract is a botanical extract derived from the fruit pericarp of the soapberry tree, primarily characterized by its high content of triterpenoid saponins, specifically sapindosides A, B, C, and D. It is utilized in pharmaceutical and personal care applications due to its potent surfactant and biological properties. Its most significant clinical application is as a vaginal spermicide, where the saponins disrupt the sperm plasma membrane, leading to the loss of motility and cell lysis. Beyond contraception, the extract exhibits antifungal, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory activities, making it effective for treating dermatological conditions such as dandruff and superficial fungal infections. It was notably developed as a contraceptive cream (Consap) by the Central Drug Research Institute in India.
