Overview

Sapindus trifoliatus extract is a plant-derived preparation obtained from the fruit pericarp of Sapindus trifoliatus, a species in the Sapindaceae family, commonly referred to as Indian soapberry or Washnut[3][6][7][8]. The extract contains a rich mixture of triterpenoid saponins (notably hederagenin) and is traditionally used for both medicinal and cosmetic purposes. Pharmacologically, it has demonstrated **anti-inflammatory**, **analgesic**, **antimigraine**, **anticonvulsant**, **anti-helmintic**, **antibacterial**, and **antifungal** effects[3][4][6]. Its central nervous system activity includes potential neuroleptic and hepatoprotective properties, and it has been investigated for both migraine prophylaxis and seizure management[1][4]. Mechanistically, Sapindus trifoliatus extract exhibits receptor binding affinity towards multiple CNS targets, notably **dopaminergic, alpha-adrenergic, muscarinic, GABA-A agonist site, Glutamate-AMPA, Glutamate-Kainate, Glutamate-NMDA agonist and glycine sites**, and **Sodium channel (site 2)**[1][4]. Traditional indications include migraine, epilepsy, fever, inflammation, bronchial asthma, cough, and skin disorders.
