Overview

Sappanwood is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) derived from the dried heartwood of *Caesalpinia sappan* L. It contains several bioactive polyphenolic compounds, most notably brazilin, protosappanin A, protosappanin B, and hematoxylin. Pharmacologically, it is recognized for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and iron-chelating properties. Recent research has explored its potential in treating iron overload in thalassemia, inhibiting SARS-CoV-2 main protease (Mpro), promoting osteogenesis in periodontitis, and alleviating atherosclerosis through FGF21/SREBP-2 signaling. It is also used in cosmetics for its pigment and skin-protective effects.
