Overview
Sapronadil SR is a sustained-release oral formulation of sarpogrelate hydrochloride, a small molecule selective 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 2A (5-HT2A) antagonist developed and marketed by AJU Pharm. By specifically blocking the 5-HT2A receptor, sarpogrelate inhibits serotonin-mediated platelet aggregation and prevents the contraction of vascular smooth muscle cells, which promotes vasodilation and improves peripheral blood flow. While sarpogrelate is traditionally indicated for the treatment of ischemic symptoms associated with chronic arterial occlusion (such as Buerger's disease and arteriosclerosis obliterans), Sapronadil SR is identified in company records as an approved treatment for hypertension in the Korean market. The sustained-release (SR) profile allows for a prolonged therapeutic effect and improved patient adherence through a reduced dosing frequency compared to immediate-release formulations.
