Saquinavir is an antiretroviral medication belonging to the class of HIV protease inhibitors. It was the first protease inhibitor approved by the FDA for use in combination with other antiretroviral agents, primarily for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV‑1) infection. Saquinavir works by inhibiting HIV‑1 protease, an enzyme essential for viral replication and maturation, thereby reducing viral load in patients with advanced immunodeficiency. Due to its poor oral bioavailability when used alone, it is typically co-administered with ritonavir, which boosts its plasma concentration and antiviral efficacy. Saquinavir does not cure HIV but helps decrease progression to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and related complications[1][2][3][5].
