Overview

SAR279356 is a monoclonal antibody developed by Sanofi for the prevention of *Staphylococcus aureus* infections, specifically targeting high-risk patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) who are on mechanical ventilation. The antibody is designed to neutralize the *S. aureus* alpha-toxin (alpha-hemolysin, Hla), a potent virulence factor that causes host cell lysis and tissue damage by forming pores in cell membranes. By inhibiting this toxin, the drug aims to prevent the progression of *S. aureus* colonization to invasive disease, such as ventilator-associated pneumonia. Clinical development reached Phase 2 but was subsequently terminated by Sanofi in 2019.
