Sarcobatus vermiculatus pollen extract, derived from the greasewood plant, is a biologic product used for the diagnosis and treatment of Type I hypersensitivity reactions. As a diagnostic tool, it is employed in percutaneous (skin prick) or intradermal testing to confirm sensitization to greasewood pollen. As a therapeutic agent, it is used in allergen immunotherapy (AIT), where escalating doses are administered subcutaneously to induce clinical tolerance. The mechanism of action involves a complex modulation of the immune system, including the induction of regulatory T cells (Tregs), a shift from Th2 to Th1 cytokine production, and the production of "blocking" antibodies such as IgG4, which compete with IgE for allergen binding on mast cells and basophils.
