Overview

Sarcodoxome is a liposomal formulation of the cytotoxic anthracycline doxorubicin, developed by the Spanish pharmaceutical company GP Pharm (part of the Lipotec Group). The drug utilizes a liposomal delivery system to encapsulate doxorubicin, which is intended to improve the therapeutic index by enhancing drug accumulation in tumor tissues via the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect while minimizing distribution to healthy tissues, thereby reducing common side effects such as cardiotoxicity and alopecia. Doxorubicin exerts its antineoplastic effect by intercalating between DNA base pairs and inhibiting the enzyme topoisomerase II, which triggers DNA strand breakage and subsequent apoptosis. Sarcodoxome is primarily targeted for use in oncology for the treatment of various solid tumors and hematological malignancies.
