Drug intelligence / Profile preview
*Sargassum aquifolium* extract is a natural product derived from the brown seaweed species *Sargassum aquifolium* (formerly known as *Sargassum binderi*). This extract is rich in bioactive secondary metabolites, including sulfated polysaccharides such as fucoidans, phlorotannins, and carotenoids like fucoxanthin. It is primarily investigated for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-diabetic properties. The extract's mechanism of action involves the potent inhibition of carbohydrate-hydrolyzing enzymes, specifically alpha-glucosidase and alpha-amylase, which helps in the management of postprandial blood glucose levels. Additionally, its high polyphenolic content contributes to significant free radical scavenging activity and the modulation of inflammatory pathways, including the potential inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines. While widely studied in pre-clinical research for metabolic and inflammatory disorders, it is currently utilized primarily as a nutraceutical or dietary supplement ingredient.
