Overview
Sargassum cristaefolium extract (SCE) is a botanical extract derived from the brown seaweed Sargassum cristaefolium, containing a variety of bioactive compounds including flavonoids, alkaloids (specifically beta-carboline alkaloids), and tannins. In preclinical models of migraine, SCE has demonstrated the ability to increase serotonin (5-HT) levels by inhibiting monoamine oxidase (MAO) and blocking 5-HT reuptake. Furthermore, the extract exhibits anti-platelet activity by reducing platelet counts and inhibiting aggregation, which are key factors in migraine pathogenesis. Its broader pharmacological profile includes antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic properties, making it a candidate for the prevention and treatment of neurovascular headaches.
