Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sargassum fusiforme polysaccharide is a bioactive sulfated polysaccharide extracted from the brown alga *Sargassum fusiforme* (also known as *Hizikia fusiformis*). It exhibits a broad spectrum of pharmacological activities, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, antiviral, and metabolic regulatory effects. In oncology, it has been shown to inhibit cell proliferation and induce apoptosis in non-small cell lung cancer and erythroleukemia cells, primarily through the inhibition of the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway and activation of mitochondrial-mediated apoptotic pathways. It also demonstrates potential in managing metabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) by regulating lipid metabolism genes like SREBP-1c and PPARα, and improving insulin resistance. Additionally, it has been investigated for its hemostatic properties in wound healing and as an antiviral agent against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), norovirus, and avian leukosis virus.
