Sargramostim is a recombinant, yeast-derived form of human granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), a glycoprotein that stimulates the proliferation, differentiation, and activation of hematopoietic progenitor cells. It is used to accelerate recovery of neutrophils and other myeloid cells after chemotherapy or bone marrow transplantation, to mobilize peripheral blood progenitor cells for collection by leukapheresis, and to reduce the risk of infection in patients with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) receiving chemotherapy. Sargramostim also improves survival following exposure to myelosuppressive doses of radiation. Its mechanism involves binding to the GM-CSF receptor on hematopoietic cells, activating JAK2/STAT1/STAT3 signaling pathways that promote cell survival and proliferation[1][4][9].
