Sarin is an extremely toxic, synthetic organophosphorus compound classified as a nerve agent and chemical weapon. It was originally developed in Germany in 1938 as a potential pesticide but was later repurposed for military use due to its high potency. Sarin acts by irreversibly inhibiting the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, leading to accumulation of acetylcholine at neuromuscular junctions and synapses throughout the nervous system. This results in continuous stimulation of muscles, glands, and central nervous system structures, causing symptoms such as muscle twitching, respiratory failure, convulsions, paralysis, and death if not treated rapidly. Sarin is a clear, colorless liquid that can evaporate into vapor; it is odorless and tasteless in pure form. It has been used in warfare and terrorist attacks (notably the Tokyo subway attack), but its production and stockpiling are now banned under international law (Chemical Weapons Convention). Treatment for exposure includes rapid decontamination and administration of antidotes such as atropine and diazepam[1][3][5][7].
