Sarmentosin is a **glycoside** classified as a nitrile glycoside, found in various plants including *Sedum sarmentosum*, *Rhodiola sacra*, and blackcurrant. It has been identified as a bioactive compound with **monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B) inhibitory properties** (IC50 ≈ 2.67 µM) and possible, but less established, inhibition of MAO-A. Sarmentosin shows activity in vitro and in vivo, including a demonstrated capacity to temper MAO-B activity in human subjects after consumption in blackcurrant extract. Additionally, in preclinical studies, sarmentosin induces **autophagy-dependent, caspase-mediated apoptosis** in hepatocellular carcinoma cells via **activation of Nrf2** and inhibition of the **mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR)** pathway, leading to anti-tumor effects without apparent toxicity to non-tumor tissues. Sarmentosin is found naturally and also used in dietary interventions using blackcurrant extract, and has been tested clinically in small human studies.
