Overview

The saRNA Marburg vaccine is a self-amplifying RNA (saRNA) vaccine candidate developed by Imperial College London for the prevention of Marburg virus disease. It utilizes a self-amplifying RNA platform, typically derived from an alphavirus backbone (such as Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus), which allows for the intracellular replication of the RNA template. This mechanism potentially leads to higher protein expression and stronger immune responses at lower doses compared to conventional mRNA vaccines. The vaccine encodes the Marburg virus glycoprotein (GP) and is formulated in lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) for intramuscular administration. It is currently being evaluated in a Phase I clinical trial (NCT05391360) alongside similar saRNA vaccines for Ebola and Lassa fever.
